JOIN THE SURJTO READING GROUP
Understanding and unlearning racism is lifelong work. We want to get better at it. Come join us!
We have had two successful rounds of reading groups with Robyn Maynard's Policing Black Lives and Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-Up Call by Arthur Manuel and Grand Chief Ronald M. Derrickson.
This round we will be reading How To Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi!
You can read reviews on the book here and here. Kendi also has a great interview on CBC.
Notes about participation:
You don’t need any background knowledge or expertise. Anyone and everyone is invited! (The only requirement is a sincere desire to learn)
You do not need to have participated in the previous book clubs to join. New members are welcome and encouraged!
We want this to be a learning-focused space so that all of us can be a bit vulnerable about what we know and don’t yet know.n
We’ll talk about ways that we can connect our learning to concrete action.
The plan is to keep meetings pretty low-key: we’ll meet for 2-hours every three or four weeks.
We’ve arranged for copies of the book to be available to borrow from the Toronto Library - we’ll share more details with folks who sign up.
Meetings will be held in a place accessible by TTC (exact location TBD) - please let us know if you need childcare or other accessibility needs.
This reading group is not being publicly advertised, but you’re strongly encouraged to bring a friend who is not already connected to SURJ!
Bring a snack to share if you can, but no worries if you can't!
Here's the schedule:
Sunday, February 23 - 11am-1pm - pg 3 - 68 ("My Racist Introduction" + chapters 1 - 5)
Sunday, March 15 - 11am-1pm - pg 69 - 121 (chapters 6 - 9)
Sunday, April 5th - 11am-1pm - pg 122 - 180 (chapters 10 - 13)
Sunday, April 26th - 11am-1pm - pg 181 - 238 (chapters 14 - 18)
Sunday, May 24th - 11am-1pm - Action Planning!
We know that people have busy lives, so don’t stress it if you can’t make every meeting or don’t get to all the reading beforehand.
If you'd like to join and can commit to attending at least two of the discussions, please email surj.comms@gmail.com. Please include whether you are able to attend the first meeting. If you're really interested in being involved but none of the dates or times work for you let us know. Please also let us know if there's anything we can do to make the reading group more accessible to you.
Hope to see you there!
