May 1 Action Blast!

🌼May Day! Regularize Everyone!🌼

Image: Photo of a crowd marching down the street with a large banner at the front reading Regularize Everyone. Status for All. No Exclusions. Other signs saying Status for All and smaller signs with a fist raised in protest are also held by crowd members.

We’ve always had to fight for our rights as workers. But right now, hundreds of thousands of migrants – people with jobs, families, and deep roots in our communities – face exploitation by unscrupulous employers, landlords, and institutions. They are unjustly excluded from the essential services and workplace protections that the rest of us take for granted.

In the May Day spirit of solidarity and struggle, SURJ Toronto is taking action this week to fight for universal regularization! We’re uniting with migrants who live and work in our communities to demand permanent resident status for ALL, without exclusion or delay!

We must fight to ensure that our neighbours, colleagues, and friends have access to respect and human dignity, to social services and basic rights, and to vibrant lives free from fear of detention or deportation.

“Migrants grow food, build homes, and care for communities – we urge the government to stop fiddling with rules and imposing caps and instead create a fair society where everyone has equal rights, which must start with permanent resident status for all. The urgent problem isn’t the number of migrants or jobs; it’s that migrants are being exploited at work, treated poorly by landlords, and denied vital services like healthcare and education because they are denied permanent residency.”
– Syed Hussan, Executive Director, Migrant Workers Alliance for Change

This May Day we’re launching a week of action to show our government what the  vast majority of Canadians already know and believe – migrant workers belong here and are a vital part of our communities, our neighbourhoods, and our society.
